Finally, An Update

It feels like it's been ages since I posted, but I've just been too consumed with my "real" life to focus all the energy I wanted towards this renegade gardening project.

But fear not! The next gardening attack will take place this Monday (July 16th). As usual, I can't disclose the location yet, as I don't want anyone crashing who shouldn't be crashing, but if you have any interest in supporting us in person or monetarily, drop me a line at chicagoguerrillagardening@gmail.com and let me know.

Attack #1
Where: Sheridan and Irving Park
Plants: Daylilies, lavender, thyme

Last night was our first "attack" on a public space and it was a huge success. Byron and I arrived at the space at around 10pm and got right to work. Within minutes we already had people stopping by, asking us about the project. "Oh my god!" one girl exclaimed, "Are you guys guerrilla gardening?!" We told her that we were. She said that she walked by this space every day and would be sure to admire it tomorrow in the daylight. We got everything done at breakneck speed and were done and back in the truck by 45 minutes after we started.

Gathering Ideas

The first "attack" is tomorrow night and I'd like to thank everyone who has showed interest in joining us!

That being said...I was out the other day, browsing for plants that would be ideal for our "not as much water as I'd like to give them" situation.

"What should I buy if I'm looking for something that doesn't require tons of watering?" I ask the woman at the nursery. "A beta fish," she resonds. Evidently being out all day in the sun not only hurts the plants, but it wilts your sense of humor into a dried up husk. Who knew?

Right now I'm thinking of sticking with daylilies (for beauty), lavender, and some other tough ground covers. I was also surprised at the soil and fertilized technology they have now to help keep plants alive when you can't help them as much as you'd like. That'll help a lot too.

And of course, as soon as everything is planted we'll put up some before and after pictures of how everything turned out. Stay tuned.

The first Chicago Guerrilla Gardening event is only 4 days away! On Monday, June 18th we'll strike our first public space in need of a facelift. The intended "target" is still undecided. Send your suggestions to chicagoguerrillagardening@gmail.com.
